The very thought of leaving Malacca without having tried a decent Nyonya meal is almost criminal, and so one of the best places to try it is at Nyonya Makko restaurant. Taking up a corner lot in Jalan Merdeka, it is easily spotted thanks to a massive yellow signboard against a brown and white painted building.

The restaurant is currently run by a fourth generation Malaccan Nyonya, so diners are guaranteed a consistently mouthwatering gastronomic experience. Menu-wise, it serves a wide array of Nyonya cuisine, with signature dishes including the 'ayam pong teh' (chicken and potato stew), assam fish, and cendol.

If you're in the mood for some sushi or a juicy steak then head over to Amigo Steak & Grill, which serves up a plethora of Western and Japanese fare. Don't be put off by the rather contrasting food choices – Amigo Steak & Grill is always packed with hungry guests - perhaps thanks to it its affordable and sizeable portions.

To experience the best of what Amigo has to offer, sink your teeth into the mozzarella chicken; it comes with crispy onion rings and the succulent black peppered meat is very tender. Western food has long been a popular option in Malacca, but this eatery is one of the best places to go for some great options with its melting pot of palatable flavours.

One of most popular satay celup restaurants in Malacca, Capitol is usually packed and is one of the cheapest outfits in town (make sure to head there early to avoid a long queue). At Capitol Satay Celup, there are more than four and a half rows of food, consisting over 80 types of skewered seafood and vegetables, like chicken, cockles, abalones, fish balls, cuttlefish, and mushrooms, to vegetables, quail's eggs, shrimps, and fried bean curds.

Besides the galore of food offered, the aromatic peanut sauce is one of the factors that make this place attractive to tourists and locals alike. The pot is regularly refilled with fresh sauce: workers would mix a generous amount of spices and gula Melaka into the gravy, rendering it thick and aromatic with a sweet flavour. Read More...

With its bright yellow sunny-side up icon beckoning in visitors and its modern granite-themed interior, Eggxtra Cafe certainly stands out amongst the crowd. Inside, you'll find a surprising wide variety of Asian dishes and freshly baked pastries alongside Musetti coffee to the denizens of Taman Melaka Raya. Inspirational quotes and quirky artwork deck nearly every corner of the restaurant, which makes for nice photo-ops.

Mostly frequented by brunch-lovers, Eggxtra Cafe offers a cosy ambience with its plush sofas and white furnishings. A definite must try is its spicy tenggiri (narrow-barred Spanish mackerel) assam pedas with a side of fried egg, teamed with freshly squeezed carrot juice or a strong double espresso (for those in need of a caffeine fix). Situated idyllically by the Malacca River, Hard Rock Café Malacca has a similar layout (outdoor and indoor seating areas, a bar, and a live stage) to the rest of the chain’s outlets across the world, with a Straits Malacca-inspired patterned floor for a distinctively Malaccan flavour to the decor.

With portions large enough to share, food at Hard Rock Cafe Malacca is certainly meant for big parties, or for those with large appetites. Either way, its usual Tex-Mex menu consists of well-known items such as sandwiches, ‘Smokes’ (barbecued chicken and beef ribs) and Legendary burgers, with an addition of Malaysian favourites such as the ‘Percik’ burger (juicy burger patty with a paste of Malaysian spices), the seafood char kuey teow and assam pedas fish. A separate kids’ menu is also available for the young ones, and its dessert options are to die for: laden with premium ice cream Haagen Dazs, they will certainly top off a great dining experience. As the name suggests, Zebra Modern Restaurant is a chic establishment with a monochromatic decor. Located opposite Starbucks Coffee, the restaurant’s plush leather seats and dark wood tables adorning the interior with a number of quirky pieces of artwork decorating the crisp white walls makes for a cosy and stylish dining environment.

Zebra Modern Restaurant serves mainly non-halal Western cuisine; its signature dishes include the mushroom Alfredo, Halddof fish roll, rib eye steak, and grilled Spanish mackerel. Portions are rather big (sharing is encouraged), but every dish, particularly the rib eye steak with rosemary pepper sauce, is well prepared and full of great flavour. For visitors with a sweet tooth, indulge in the rich chocolate fondue with a healthy dose of fresh cut fruits.
