Malacca City Restaurants

Where and What to Eat in Malacca City

The enticing allure of good dining is as much a part of Malacca's appeal as its narrow roads, antiquated shops and the remnants of European empires. In the last few years alone an overabundance of new dining venues has sprung up around Malacca. Scores of these restaurants are in the vicinity of Malacca’s historic buildings, and some are even located within them. Offering local fare and international gastronomy, most of these cafés, bistros and restaurants have simply sumptuous food.

Most importantly you can’t think of Malacca without thinking of Nyonya cuisine – especially pervasive throughout the city centre. Nyonya fare is a unique blend of Chinese, Malay and sundry cooking styles that has evolved from the social dynamics of the different cultures. While in Malacca, don’t miss out on the chance to taste the ayam pong teh at Makko, the mozzarella chicken at Amigo or the satay celup at Restoran Ban Lee Siang.

Amigo Steak & Grill

If you fancy some sushi or a juicy steak then don’t miss out on the opportunity to dine at Amigo, which serves up a plethora of Western and Japanese fare. Sink your teeth into the mozzarella chicken, crispy onion rings and the simply succulent sizzling black pepper chicken. Western food has long been a popular option in Malacca but this eatery is the best place to go for some great options with its melting pot of palatable flavours.

Medan Ikan Bakar Muara Sungai Duyung Melaka

If you’re looking for fresh seafood, try Medan Ikan Bakar Muara Sungai Duyung. Located along Jalan Padang Temu, the otak-otak, grilled fish and succulent prawns are especially popular. Make sure you try the sambal calamari which allows you to enjoy the real, unadulterated taste of squid. A very pleasant and breezy place since it’s so near to the sea; but be prepared to wait for your food.

Opening Hours: 17:00 – 00:00
Address: KM 4-5, Jalan Padang Temu, Permatang Pasir, 75460.
Tel: (6010) 225 8741

Nadeje Patisserie

Nadeje Patisserie is a classy and cosy café that specializes in a simply heavenly and delicious mille crêpe. The prices are a little steep and the menu is limited so if you want a complete meal then you’d best look elsewhere. However this French cake is so spectacular – and you can’t find it anywhere else in Malaysia – which definitely makes it worth a trip.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
Address: G-23 & 25, Jln PM4, Plaza Mahkota, 75000 Melaka.
Tel: (606) 284 3469

Restoran Ban Lee Siang

A speciality native to Malacca, satay celup is another must-try dish. Basically this dish is like fondue but much better as you dip skewered raw meat, tofu, prawns and vegetables into a communal pot of thick and nutty boiling satay sauce and cook it to your liking.

Opening Hours: 17:00
Address: 45 Jalan Ong Kim Wee, 75300.
Tel: (606) 284 1935 or (6012) 651 5322

Restoran Nyonya Makko

It goes without saying that it’s nearly criminal to leave Malacca without having a decent Nyonya meal. Try Restoran Makko – which serves up fare that is noticeably authentic – as it’s been around for some time now. Run by a fourth generation Malacca Nyonya, you simply can’t go wrong when you order popular dishes like the ayam pong teh, assam fish, udang sambal petai, kangkung belacan and cendol.

Wok & Pan East Meets West Cuisine

Get ready for east-meets-west cuisine when you step into Wok & Pan. Even though the restaurant boasts minimalistic décor, the food here is simply mouth-watering and flavoursome. Try the grilled seafood platter, BBQ pork chops, oxtail stew in red wine, Mexican pork chops and the Australian rib eye steak.
