    Malacca's Pioneer Satay Celup Restaurant

Capitol Satay Celup is one of Malacca's favourite haunts for a savoury meal with loved ones. This pioneer of the satay celup business in Malacca City is located in Lorong Bukit Cina and is easy to find... just look for a queue of hungry diners trailing out onto the street. For those who are unfamiliar of the term, satay celup or 'steamboat satay' is a dish where raw or semi-cooked meat and vegetables on skewers are dipped into a hot pot of thick, spicy peanut sauce.

Open since the 1950s, Capitol Satay Celup is a modest establishment of two shop lots with tiled floors and spacious seating arrangements. Its white walls are decorated with framed magazine and newspaper articles as well as photos of celebrities who have savoured its delicious satay celup. It is the only Capitol Satay Celup in the world, and the restaurant has several signboards scattered on the walls which informs diners of its exclusivity and cautions them against any false duplicates.

  • Heavily frequented by locals and tourists, Capitol Satay Celup is usually packed as soon as it opens at 17:00. Due to its immense popularity, guests are encouraged to leave as soon as they finish eating to allow other diners to have their fill of sweet and savoury satay celup. Once diners are assigned to a table (which has a stainless-steel pot in the middle to contain the peanut sauce), the waitress will guide them to select their preferred skewers from the refrigerated counters while they clean up the table and prepare the sauce. The service at Capitol Satay Celup is impressive with efficient waiters replacing the peanut sauce with a new batch as soon as the previous diners have left and serving guests with their preferred drinks and premium skewers.

At Capitol Satay Celup, there are over 80 types of skewered seafood and vegetables, such as chicken, cockles, abalones, fish balls, cuttlefish, and mushrooms, vegetables, quail's eggs, shrimps, and fried bean curds – truly, something for everyone. Best of all, each stick goes for as low as RM0.90! Premium food items like skewered tiger prawns, abalones and scallops are also offered by passing waiters after diners have consumed a certain number of skewers. Enjoying satay celup is a no-brainer - diners can just leave the skewers inside the pot for as long as they like, depending on how well they want their skewered food to be cooked.

Besides the abundance of food offered, the aromatic peanut sauce is one of the factors that make this place attractive to tourists and locals. Comprised of 22 ingredients, the sauce is a savoury combination of a glutinous texture, aromatic with a sweet flavour. From time to time, extra spices and ground peanuts will be added into the pot and the waiters will stir the gravy to ensure that nothing gets stuck or burnt at the bottom of the steel pot.

Satay celup is one of Malacca’s signature dishes, so no trip is complete without savouring a taste! With piping hot aromatic peanut and wide assortment of skewered meat and vegetables, Capitol Satay Celup is one of the best eatery to go to for a satisfying experience of Malacca’s proud culinary heritage.
